Sarah Ann Kerchner
--------------Research from Charles Kerchner:
The 1850 record showed that the target family of George and Sarah Kerchner had a son named Joseph. So I used that rarer given name to do the exhaustive search for the family in the 1850 census. A tedious job but it worked.I found the (George "Kerchaner" of the 1860 census of Carroll Co MD) in the 1850 census listed as George "Karricker" in District 6, Carroll Co MD. Karricker is another phonetic misspelling I have seen over the years for my family name. And yes indeed that George and Sarah had a son named George, age 15, in the 1850 census. That fits very well with the George W. Kershner, age 23 in 1860 census record we found in New Windsor, Carroll Co MD, being his son. Since his actual birth year was 1836 one could expect to find him as 23,24, or 25 in various census accounts depending on the exact date of enumeration and whether the person decided to shave or add a year or so to their real age, etc. That New Windsor, Carroll County, MD area is about 15 miles away and s.w. from Manchester, Carroll Co MD. They probably had different census takers in 1860 and thus the difference in surname spelling during the 1860 census. It also ties in well with the 1870 census record for your Geo. W. Kershner, age 34, born in Maryland, found in the 1870 census of Beaver Creek, Greene Co OH, and the later data for him in the 1880 census record of G.W. Kershner in Butler, Montgomery Co OH. Here is the 1850 census record:
1850; District 6; Carroll Co MD; p.356; l.17; dwelling 312; family 315; George Karricker (sic), 46, farmer; Sarah 42; Elizabeth 19; Joel 17, laborer; George 15, laborer; Mary 13; Daniel 11; Joseph S. 9; Sarah 5; and Jacob 1. All were recorded as being born in PA per this census account. But later census accounts say wife Sarah was born in MD and that this George age 15, and most of all of the children of George and Sarah, were born in MD.
Date of birth (10 Feb)is theory/best estimate of David Bailey.

Note:
"William McLeoud (McCloud, McClioud, McLeod) Sr. was born 13 Mar 1779 in Virginia; died 3 Oct 1854. Married Prudence, born in Ohio, died 14 Sept 1835. He probably migrated to Ohio after that territory opened to settlers. It is not yet known in what county or town in Virginia that William was born, nor the last name of his wife. Whether he went there as a child with his parents or after growing to manhood is not known at this time. He probably married in Ohio, since Prudence was born there, and it seems reasonable that all their children were in Ohio, because William Jr. was born in Ohio and he was next to the youngest child. The youngest, Ross, may have been born in another state. It is not known at this time (1910) where the children, other than William Jr., lived and died and to whom they married. Five children born to them:
1. Jane b. June 9, 1805, died Sept. 27, 1869

Notes from Julie Flint:
William Pierce Butler's father was William T. Butler. My Dad, Thomas' notes
indicate a Deed to a lot in Odd Fellows Cemetery in the name of William T.
Butler dated 1/19/1872 (called Mt. Peace?) In any case, the remains of the
Odd Fellows Cemetery were moved to Longview Cemetery, 500 Huntington Pk.,
Rockledge, PA 19046, (215) 379-1600.We found a William Butler buried in a lot deeded to Samuel Kidd 3/12/73. I
have a copy of Samuel Kidd's certificate. There is a stamp on it that says
"Removed to Lawnview Diamond Project, Susquehanna Section 44, 20 graves.
Date removed 8/29/1951(Samuel Kidd in 1910 census on same page as William Flint & Rebecca C. Butler)

Speculations....
Martha was married 3 times? Mr. Biddle, Mr. Edgar, Mr. Altemus?
Rebecca Cresson is really Rebecca Cresson Biddle?
Letter from Julie Cooper Jan 4 2006
----------------------------------------------------
Tom, I found another story...about my grandmother, Anna Butler's family.
It started in 1880 when I found William, Rebecca C. (Cresson), Annie R. and Edward H. Butler. Living in their household was a Martha Altening, born in 1816 in Conn. who was the mother-in law living with the Butlers.
I searched backwards for Martha Altening. In 1870 I found Martha Altimus, born 1817 in Conn. living with William P. Butter, Rebecca C., Anna R., Edward H., George, Lewis and Martha. (I assume these last three children died between 1870 and 1880.
In 1860 I found Martha Altemus (born 1816 in Conn.) with George (21) and Lemuel Biddle (14). I found this extremely interesting because I knew Annie (from her autograph book) had Biddle cousins Mattie and Nellie.
In 1850 I found George (11) and Lemuel (4) Biddle living with Martha Edgar (born 1817 in Conn.) and her husband Wm.
The only record I could find of Rebecca Cresson (Martha Altening's supposed daughter) was in 1850 living with Geo.and Hannah (I thought it was Lynder but may have been Synder)) in Roxborough, PA in Philadelphia County. Dad's notes mentions Roxborough. The only time she appears again is in the 1870 census as Rebecca C. Butter.
I found a Fredrick Altemus in 1830 in Roxborough but don't know what that means.
I then started following the Biddle boys. In 1880 I found Lemuel with his wife, Mary and three children, Mattie, Nellie and Lemuel in Cleveland, Ohio. I actually started in 1900 in Los Angeles and found that Nellie was born in Ohio so I went back to Ohio. Dad had said that his rich relatives had moved to California and I have a letter from Nellie to Dad from LA when Annie (Dad's mother) died in 1939.
Moving forward I found the Lemuel Biddle family in 1900 in Los Angeles.
In 1910 I found Lemuel with wife, Mary and Nellie in LA. That same year I found Mattie with husband Michael Reider, a daughter and son in LA.
In 1920 I found Nellie living with her mother, Mary. in LA
In 1930 I found Michael, Mattie and Nellie living together in LA.
A long time ago I found Mattie and Michael in the California death records (don't have it at hand ) they died somewhere in the 40's.
In 1880 I found George Biddle (born 1838) living with his wife, Ann and daughter Mattie in the home of Ann's father, Merritt Gibson. It lists George as a cigar maker.
I found a George W. Biddle, segarmaker, in the 1890 Philadelphia City Directory.
The mystery is who is Martha Edgar, Altemus and is she the mother of the Biddle boys and Rebecca Cresson? How? If Nellie and Mattie were cousins of Annie that makes them all her children I think. Maybe they were adopted, maybe she was married to a Cresson early on (Rebecca was born in 1831), then a Biddle...(George Biddle was born in 1838,) then Edgar and then Altemus (couldn't find Edgar after 1850).
Sorry I haven't attached all the census records...not sure how, but they're easy to find by the year. Let me know what you think. Julie
